SAVVY SENIORS

This over 60's  programme called 'Savvy Seniors' has been designed by Counsellor Jaqui Barrett and supports well and active elderly living alone in the city and dealing with loneliness, waning confidence and a lack of family and social supports.

Savvy Seniors meet fortnightly and have social, creative, educative and wellness objectives.

There are many benefits for participants which include creating a support and social network, having fun, building confidence, discussing topics relative to their age group and having a sense of contribution and value in designing their own unique programme.

The goal of the group is to become self supporting and self directing.

After 20 weeks the group moves into the second stage of creating and facilitating their own gatherings.

Groups are limited to around 12 participants, small enough to be intimate and supportive yet big enough to be interesting.

This current group of elders (ages range between 60 - mid 80's) have created a healthy support and social network between themselves.

People interested in wanting more information or expressing their interest can ring Home and Family Counselling Centre on 630 8961

Jaqui says “I believe this is an important initiative which will support our elders and help to maintain good mental health amongst this sometimes forgotten group in our communities. Feeling useful, remaining active and maintaining a mutually supportive network no doubt helps to protect against premature aging"

 3) I HAVE , I AM , I CAN

Many of the youth present with challenges relating to family life where there are issues such as addiction, poverty, immigration, separation and mental health concerns. These stressors greatly impact on their sense of self and thus their ability to achieve. Arising from the experience of delivering these programmes Home & Family Counselling has identified the need to develop a new programme that has more of a focus on developing resiliency.

We believe our new programme will greatly assist youth to be better able to cope with many of the stressors and experience more success in their lives, within school, families, peer groups and the wider community.

The outcomes that we envisage for these young people are:
•             Making better choices in their lives;
•             Greater aspiration in what they can do /achieve for themselves
•             Greater motivation to achieve their goals
•             Knowledge of how they can achieve them i.e. what resources they have.
•             Risk reduction

Indicators to assess programme performance will include evaluations by participants, their families, facilitators and the host schools.

The programme is run in High Schools, at no cost to the school, and requires the support from a lead person within the school; usually this is via the guidance counselling department. The programme runs for 6 consecutive weeks, 2 hours per session and is for both males and females.

If you are interested in finding out more about this programme please contact Shelley Anderson at Home and Family Counselling, North Shore at PH 4199853
